How to choose the perfect oral irrigator?

Take a short quiz and find out in 2 minutes which irrigator model
will best suit your individual needs.

An investment in long-term tooth and gum health starts with choosing the right device.

Oral irrigators differ in their technological and technical parameters. The stream of an incorrectly chosen irrigator may not reach plaque left in deeper areas, so the device will be ineffective or, in certain cases, even harmful.

We share 4 key steps that will help you confidently choose the oral irrigator that best suits your individual needs.

1

Consider the condition of your teeth and gums

Assess the main purpose for which you will use the oral irrigator:

  • Preventive cleaning of healthy teeth and gums – most models that remove plaque above the gum line are suitable.
  • Shallow gum pockets (up to 5 mm deep) – a portable or countertop irrigator with a medium-strength pulsating water stream without air admixtures is recommended.
  • Gum pockets (deeper than 5 mm) – a countertop irrigator capable of generating a powerful, pulsating water stream without air admixtures is essential for deep cleaning.
  • Implants, braces, bridges – a strong pulsating water stream is needed that can easily reach harder-to-access places under prostheses or around orthodontic appliances.
📊 Fact: According to the World Health Organization, about 80% of adults have gum inflammation, which, as it progresses, leads to hard-to-clean gum pockets (periodontal disease). It is the second most common cause of tooth loss after tooth decay.

If you notice bleeding when brushing your teeth (even if you feel no pain), there is a high probability that plaque that a brush cannot reach is being left in your gum grooves, causing gum inflammation.

2

Choose the water stream type

Not all oral irrigators have the same water stream. Cleaning effectiveness depends on how often and how strongly the device sprays water stream pulses.

Continuous / rarely pulsating

▪ Suitable only for cleaning surface plaque

▪ Quickly empties the water tank

▪ Hardly penetrates deep and narrow areas

▪ Is often mixed with air admixtures

Frequent pulsation (>1700 pulses/min.)

▪ Penetrates narrow gaps excellently

▪ Effectively cleans under the gums and around implants

▪ Saves water (one tank fill lasts longer)

▪ Recommended for those with dental prostheses and gum pockets

📊 Fact: A toothbrush removes only about 60% of dental plaque – the rest accumulates between the teeth, under the gums, and around dental implants and dental prostheses. Plaque that is not fully removed is one of the most common causes of tooth and gum diseases.

Technological advantage: all Aquapick models feature a pulsating stream of pure water without air admixtures – this ensures maximum safety and effectiveness when cleaning both above the gums and in subgingival areas.

Countertop or portable device?

Think about where and how often you will use the oral irrigator. This comparison will help you understand the key differences:

Criterion 🏠 Countertop irrigator ✈️ Portable irrigator
Stream effectiveness ✔ High power ✔ Standard power
Stream adjustment ✔ Wide range ⚠️ Limited settings
Water tank ✔ Large capacity (400–600 ml) ⚠️ Compact tank (150–300 ml)
Handling ergonomics ✔ Light handle ⚠️ Heavier body
Family use ✔ Ideal choice ⚠️ For individual use
Power and space ⚠️ Mains powered ✔ Rechargeable battery
Transport ⚠️ Countertop device ✔ Great for travel

✅ Recommendations:

  • If you have an electrical outlet in your bathroom – choose a countertop oral irrigator (the most versatile choice).
  • If you travel often – a portable modelwill suit you better, but pay attention to whether its stream type and power are right for you.
Tip for frequent travelers: If your situation requires a powerful water stream (you have dental implants, bridges, gum pockets) but you travel often, consider having 2 separate devices: a portable oral irrigator for travel and a countertop one – for the most effective use at home.
4

Pay attention to the tank capacity

One full cleaning cycle requires 300–500 ml of water. If the tank is smaller, you will have to refill it while cleaning your teeth.

  • Small tank (<200 ml):
Most often found in portable models. Convenient for travel, but less practical for everyday use at home.
  • Large tank (≥400 ml):
In countertop models. No need to refill; the device itself stands by the sink, and only a light handle stays in your hand.
Tip: When choosing a portable model with a large tank (>200 ml), it is important to pay attention to ergonomics. Holding a larger device while cleaning reduces maneuverability, and the extra weight tires the wrist faster.

Safety – most important

Avoid devices that mix air into the water!

Most cheap models from Aliexpress, Temu, Shein and even some well-known brands have simplified internal mechanisms that spray air bubbles together with the water stream. Such a stream is unsuitable for cleaning under the gums and can cause a dangerous condition – facial tissue emphysema (air entering the soft tissues).

Aquapick uses advanced patented technologies that remove air from the water stream – therefore all Aquapick devices are safe to use for cleaning both above and below the gums.

A properly chosen oral irrigator is one of the most meaningful
investments in long-term tooth and gum health!
